Our History
1997-2015
Directed by Rosch Mirkes from 1997, the ensemble's repertoire was extremely varied, ranging from sacred music of the High Middle Ages and the Renaissance to the most contemporary works, such as ‘Immanuel’ and ‘Te Deum’, by Luxembourg composer Luc Rollinger, premiered in 2004, as well as folk and popular music from Latin America and Russian music from the first half of the last century, such as Serge Prokofiev's cantata ‘Alexander Nevsky’.
Despite this eclecticism, Eurocantica's two favourite periods remained the Baroque and Romantic periods. Having performed works such as Vivaldi's ‘Gloria’ on numerous occasions, as well as works by other famous composers such as Bach, Brahms, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Pachelbel, Telemann, Rossini and Puccini, notably with the Ars Musica ensemble, and the Luxembourg Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Martin Elmquist, Eurocantica gave a concert in 2005 entitled ‘From Bach to Vivaldi’, during which it performed several works from this extraordinarily rich musical period.
In 2002, the ensemble sang Franz Schubert's ‘Stabat Mater’ on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Estro Armonico orchestra, an orchestra that has accompanied the choir on numerous subsequent occasions, notably in March 2006, in a performance of Antonin Dvorak's Mass in D, and in November of the same year, in Mozart's Coronation Mass conducted by Guy Van Waas.
Eurocantica also gave a number of concerts abroad at the invitation of foreign conductors, notably on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, notably in the Czech Republic (1998), France (2002, 2003 and 2007) and Germany (2006), where it performed several works from its sacred music repertoire, including Puccini's ‘Missa di Gloria’ and Scarlatti's ‘Missa Capellae Pontificae’, and most recently Michael Haydn's Requiem.
2015-2024
After being directed for 18 years by Rosch Mirkes, the ensemble began singing under the direction of Andy Loor since 2015. Its repertoire continued to be extremely varied, ranging from baroque music to the most contemporary works. Following the production of ‘Der Geiger von Echternach’ by Luxembourg composer Lou Koster, Eurocantica sang film music, gospels and Tolga Kashif's ‘Queen Symphony’, as well as classical and baroque works such as Haydn's ‘Requiem’, Homilius's ‘Weihnachstoratorium’ and Telemann.
To enrich its programmes, the ensemble continued to join forces with the Estro Armonico orchestra and with other choirs such as the Sängerbond Diekirch municipal choir, Sängerbond Helvetia Tandel or the Ambitus ensemble for larger-scale projects.
