Interview: Daniel Lang

“Singing, above all a moment of sharing and pleasure”

The vocal ensemble Eurocantica, under the direction of its new choirmaster Daniel Lang, is offering a programme at the start of 2025, composed of works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Fauré, but also Rutter, Whittacre, Rheinberger.

"It's a very diverse line-up, spanning different eras and many countries. With some very interesting pieces that we don't always get the chance to hear," enthuses Daniel Lang.

The Eurocantica choristers will perform songs in French, English, German, a cappella , but also alongside the mezzo-soprano soloist Joëlle Wiseler. The piano accompaniment is provided by Laetitia Urhausen.

Daniel Lang took over the artistic direction of the vocal ensemble Eurocantica at the beginning of October 2024. After only three months of work and rehearsals, the young conductor presents himself to the public for the first time with his ensemble.

Why direct a choir when he is already a professor at the Luxembourg Conservatory of Music?

"I wanted to set myself a new challenge, the time had come to embark on this new project. I have already been working with choirs for several years, not only accompanying them, but also conducting them. When the opportunity arose to work with a project ensemble, such as Eurocantica, I did not hesitate for a moment."

A professional musician with multiple commitments, Daniel Lang also appreciates being able to work and share his passion with amateurs. "Let's not forget that the word 'amateur' comes from 'amare', the one who loves. So it's the pleasure of singing, sharing and making music that counts. I can contribute to achieving a result, an optimal level for everyone."

The choir director is also aware that, "even if we always try to achieve the best possible result, we must never cross certain limits. These exist, it is a fact. We must deal with them, but they must never be a hindrance. Because, the choristers come to rehearsals of their own free will, these meetings must remain moments of satisfaction, of pleasure, but never of frustration."

Why did you choose choral singing in particular? Once again, Daniel Lang's answer is direct. "The first reason is above all social. Choral singing brings together people with multiple origins and pasts, but also different voices. With the end result, the quest for an interesting, common and above all homogeneous result. It is about giving body and soul to everything that the composer has noted in his score. This process is captivating."
